What Is Google Classroom?


With the help of Google Classroom, teachers and students can create an online classroom to manage all the documents students need. Documents are stored in Google Drive and can be edited in Drive applications, such as Google Docs, Sheets, etc. However, what sets Google Classroom apart from the standard Google Drive experience is the teacher/student interface designed by Google for the way teachers and students think and work.

 

What does Google Classroom do?


Google Classroom sits between you and Google Drive and provides a teacher / student-friendly way to manage class documents. You can use Google Classroom to:

 

Do homework: As a teacher, the most important task you want to do in Google Classroom is to do homework for students. When creating assignments, you can upload the necessary documents for students to read or work on. Students receive email notifications about new assignments. After completion, students can ‘hand in the assignment, after which they can assess the assignment.

 

Announcement: If you have a short announcement for the whole class, you can quickly enter the announcement, and the announcement will be emailed to all students in the class.

 

Saving lesson materials: The materials you add to your homework are not the only files that can be saved. You can save all other necessary documents for students to Google Drive.

 

Allow interaction with students: Students can respond to assignments and notifications and send emails to each other through the Classroom interface.

 

Note:

 

When creating documents for students, you may want to use Google applications (such as Google Docs and Sheets) instead of third-party applications (such as Microsoft Word or Excel). The reason is that the Google application is fully integrated with Classroom, while third-party applications require many downloads, conversions, and re-uploading of documents. When students open a Google doc to work on, the changes they make are automatically saved to the document in Google Drive, and you can review them after making the changes without downloading or re-uploading the document.

 


Covid-19 and Google Classroom

 

Covid-19 encourages teachers and students to break through the four walls and enter the digital world. This world prides itself on unlimited ideas, talents, and skills.

 

Before the crisis, only a few teachers used Google Classroom, but now it is embraced with open arms, showing all stakeholders what they are missing: an online platform that has the potential to break down invisible barriers. The classroom paradigm brings students closer to each other and their ultimate goals.

 

Which devices can Google Classroom support?


Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers support Google Classroom. The Google Classroom app is also easily available on Android and Apple iOS mobile devices.

 

What are the main functions of Google Classroom?

 

Assignments: Teachers can use learning materials (such as YouTube videos, Google Form surveys, or PDFs in the drive) to create assignments.

 

Customizable grading system: Teachers can choose a marking system and create grading categories. If teachers want students to achieve an overall grade, they can choose from one of the following systems:

 

Total score level: Divide the student’s total score by the highest possible score.


Weighted by Category Score: Assign a weight to the score category. Then calculate the average score for each grade category and multiply it by the grade weight to get a total score of 100%.

 

No overall grade: If the teacher chooses not to grade the student.

 

Virtual Discussion: Teachers can invite students to answer question-oriented discussions and respond to classmates. Because teachers can provide feedback to students, comments in Google Docs can be discussed in two ways. It is the best way to keep students engaged, especially if you can’t see them. Teachers can manage the discussion by choosing not to comment or make comments for specific individual students.

 

Announcement: Teachers can provide the latest information to students through announcements. Announcements are messages without tasks; they are only communications to students, information about deadlines, tests, or schoolwork. Teachers can control the time for announcements and manage the answers and comments on the announcement posts.

 

Real-Time Lesson: This is one of the newest features that allow teachers to teach in real-time, virtually through Google Meet. Teachers can add up to 249 people to the hangout call, and approximately 1 million viewers can broadcast live in real-time. You can also record these meetings or lectures so that students who missed the live broadcast can watch them later.

 

Get started with Google Classroom.


Like other Google apps, you need a Google account to use it. But not only every Google account can serve Classroom; you need a Google Apps for Education account. This is different from your default Google account. Follow the steps below to set it up.

 

Keep In mind:

 

Make sure you have all the correct permissions for this installation from the organization and department.

 

Step 1

 

Open a web browser and go to classic.google.com. You must log in with a Google account.

 

Step 2


If you’re using a regular Google account, you’ll see the message “Sorry! Currently,” Classroom “is only available to Google Apps for Education users.” Click on the “Get started with the app” button.

 

Step 3

 

On the Google Apps for Education page, you can read all the information about the service or click the Get Download Today button in the top right corner.

 

Step 4

 

Fill in the form with your settings information and click “Next.”

 

Step 5

 

Your school probably has a website, and you want to use it. Click on the option “Use a domain name that I have already purchased” and type the domain (see Figure 1).

 

Note:

 

If no domain is available in step 5, you can purchase your domain from Google. The cost of a .com or .org domain is $ 12 per year; the price of a .net domain is $ 10. If you choose this option, it will guide you through the purchase process; you must use a credit card to charge the domain name.


Step 6

 

Click Next.

 

Step 7

 

Enter the username and password you want to use.

 

Step 8

 

Enter the required text in the image to prove you are not a robot, check the “read and agree” box, then click “accept and register.”

 

Google creates your account and then logs into the management portal. From there, you must verify your domain, which means you must prove that you are the “owner.” If you are using a school domain, you will need help from the webmaster with this step.
